Segregating sites unique to ancient individuals. The number of ancient lineages required to ensure a probability higher than 0.95 of seeing at least one segregating site where the mutation is unique to ancient individuals. Samples are taken by the bouquet sampling strategy (see Figure 2) and the number of extant samples is fixed at 30. For computational reasons there is an upper limit of 50 ancient individuals. The number of lineages required is shown as a function of θ = 2N μ and the maximum attainable sampling time τ max . Contour lines of the required number of individuals are shown at the base of the plot.
